Safeguarding the Future of the Girl Child Combating Gender-Based Violence and High-Risk Urban Exposure in Sumbawanga

📌 Project Overview

Malaika Social Organization (MASO) is implementing a targeted intervention to protect adolescent girls from Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and exposure to high-risk urban environments in Sumbawanga Municipal Council.

This project focuses on empowering female secondary school students with knowledge, confidence, and protection skills while strengthening the capacity of teachers to respond effectively to GBV cases.

🎯 Target Area

Sumbawanga Municipal Council, specifically:

  • Sumbawanga Secondary School
  • Mazwi Secondary School
  • Kanda Secondary School
  • Kizwite Secondary School
  • Katuma Secondary School

👥 Beneficiaries

Direct Beneficiaries:

  • 500 Female Students
  • 20 Guidance and Counseling Teachers

Indirect Beneficiaries:

  • Over 1,000 students (including boys) through peer education and awareness

   The Challenge

Sumbawanga is rapidly growing, but this growth has created new risks for young girls.

Many schools are located near:

  • Bars and nightclubs
  • Informal guest houses
  • High-risk social environments

This exposes students to:

  • Sexual exploitation
  • Substance abuse
  • Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

At the same time:

  • Reporting systems are weak
  • Teachers lack specialized GBV response skills
  • Girls lack confidence and life skills to resist pressure

🎯 Project Objectives

This project aims to:

  • Empower girls with knowledge on GBV, reproductive health, and legal rights
  • Strengthen teachers to act as first responders for GBV cases
  • Build confidence and life skills through sports and interactive learning
  • Create safe reporting systems in schools
  • Promote dialogue on unsafe environments near schools
